How to do a video resume? Stand out on your job application!

25.01.2022

Do you know what you need to apply for a job? Companies will usually ask for the Curriculum Vitae, even if this document does not always convey everything we would like, and, especially in jobs with high demand, it can go unnoticed among dozens of other resumes.

Getting to stand out when you have only sent the CV is more difficult because the human resources department usually receives several applications from which they only know the CV standard data.

Therefore, we believe that standing out for the job positions is positive to become memorable to the HR team. The fact that they keep you in mind will benefit you because you will be present in the whole process, and if they don't end up choosing you, they may keep you in mind another time. When you are interested, we highly recommend attaching a cover letter or, in this case, a video resume!

What is the video curriculum?

The video curriculum is the live representation of your resume. It is a recording that adds value to your CV because it allows you to explain and sometimes demonstrate your skills, character, and professional and personal experience. It is the way to personalize your application and thus stand out from the rest of the participants.

It is still not common to apply through video resumes in Spain, even if some international companies may facilitate a recording platform to support your application. We promote this action by asking the candidates, during the selection process, to record themselves answering some questions to bring the curricular data to life and empower their candidacy.

As you well know, what you send when applying to candidacy must demonstrate part of your skills. Are you innovative, dynamic, and eager to learn, among other characteristics? Prove it by attaching a video CV!

How to make a video cv?

  • Prepare well what you are going to say. This option can help you better explain the points described in the Curriculum vitae, so it is crucial to prepare it beforehand so that the speech flows naturally.
  • Do not repeat what is in the CV. Highlight experience, build on your strengths and weaknesses, and set examples where possible.
  • Pay attention to the details. When you prepare the recording, film yourself with a white or uncluttered background, and good lighting, while keeping an eye on your appearance. As if it were an online job interview or CV photo!
  • Watch out for the video duration. Guarantee that the video does not last more than 2 or 3 minutes. Make it short and focus on what is essential so that watching the video is not tedious.
  • Be clear and concise. Make the video interesting to watch and grab the attention of whoever is watching it. Get the viewer involved and make it active: appeal to the viewer, ask yourself questions, express through body expression... even edit it if you can!
  • Focus on yourself. We do not recommend converting the video curriculum to each position as it could be an extra workload. Therefore, we recommend you focus more on yourself (skills, strengths, weaknesses, experience, learning, etc.) and not change the content depending on the application. You will achieve an excellent result by focusing on making one quality video instead of working simultaneously on several videos.

Now that you know how to stand out with your candidacy, do you dare to do a video resume? We recommend uploading the video privately on platforms like YouTube or Vimeo and then sending the link to the contact person: it will be easier for both you and the company! In addition, you can also make yourself known by posting the video on social networks such as LinkedIn and captivating other professionals.
