Positive influence: improve your surroundings

19.10.2021

It starts to feel like we see a light of hope in the whole pandemic situation that we have been hoping for the last months. Nonetheless, we want to remember what has helped us to be strong and always push forward: the surrounding people (and not only physically).

And it is that the positive influence that we give off, and that comes to us from others, is a potential tool to build a better world.

We already recalled it a few months ago, in a conference by Victor Küppers, the importance of being positive and the benefit it has on the surrounding people: family, friends, work teams, clients and, in general, the people we come across in our daily activities. The example that people with positive influence give is inspiring, and impacts on other people who, at the same time, want to grow and be better.

In addition, we already know that by working as a team, we can go further than working alone. We all like to positively influence others, and even more if it helps us to achieve our own goals. However, we must always keep in mind that to have a positive influence we must create a win-win relationship.

What does it mean to influence positively?

It implies the intention to convince, persuade, influence and impress others, so that they contribute to achieve the positive objectives that we set ourselves. Some examples of people who have positively influenced society, contributing to the transformation of the world, are Greta Thunberg, who was on school-strike for climate change every Friday; Martin Luther King with the movement in favour of African American people; Malala Yousafzai, who fights for women's rights in Iran, and many others. These are models with a great influence in society, but on a daily basis you can do many actions to positively influence your surroundings.

How can you do it?

Some skills you can practice that will improve positively your influence are:

  • Motivate
  • Achieve the active participation of those involved
  • Be clear and define the objectives
  • Persuade
  • Empathize
  • Personal commitment
  • Be trustworthy
  • Report decisions and actions
  • Monitoring and accompanying the team

As it can be seen, the mentioned skill can be easily practised in the workplace, helping to create a more comfortable and productive environment.Regardless of the position we hold, we can always be a positive influence. We can transmit our knowledge to other colleagues, we can give feedback to our bosses, and we can empower our team, among many other actions. In another article we already proposed ways to encourage these behaviors among work teams.

To sum up, you should be that person you would like to have as a friend, partner, manager, family member... and you will see how you end up surrounding yourself with people who want to grow and be better. Likewise, trust in others will be enhanced, a very important requirement for job satisfaction, as we will discuss another day.
