Internal and external changes at work can affect our level of well-being and cause what we call stress. In this article, you will find a summary of strategies for coping with this stress at work and learning to recognise and relativise it.
Types of stress and symptoms
There are different types of stress that can affect employees, such as episodic or chronic stress. Symptoms can manifest themselves in many ways, including fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating and sleep problems. There are also many ways to manage this stress, including:
Breathing techniques
Practicing breathing techniques helps us to become more aware of the situation and to reduce the stress of the moment, perhaps caused by an unexpected workload. Pausing to take a deep breath and relax can reduce stress and improve our ability to cope with difficult situations.
Perfectionism management and relativisation
At Axxon, when we ask candidates to describe themselves, many use the adjective perfectionist. Although this can be a very positive quality, it is important to put it into perspective and not fall into excessive perfectionism. Accepting that not everything has to be perfect, setting healthy stress boundaries, knowing our limits and when to stop can help us reduce pressure.
Realistic objectives
Linked to the last point, it is essential to set realistic and manageable workloads to avoid exhaustion and work stress. Effective time management and prioritisation of tasks can help to distribute the workload fairly and reduce the feeling of overwork.
Disconnection
Establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life is essential to promoting wellbeing. Practicing disconnection after work, closing your email and taking time for recreation and social activities can help recharge your batteries and reduce stress.
Can the design of the office help to improve our wellbeing?
The workplace can have a significant impact on employee wellbeing. Open-plan offices encourage collaboration and communication, but can also be loud, noisy and distracting. Working in private spaces and cubicles provides a quieter environment that is more conducive to concentration.
Managing stress in the workplace is fundamental to wellbeing and productivity. By implementing these strategies, we can create a healthier and calmer working environment for everyone.
