The challenge of talent retention in the digital age

23.04.2024

It is the year 2024. We find ourselves in a deeply digitalised environment, a reality that is constantly evolving. Digital transformation has not only changed the way we work, but new technologies have brought endless innovation to all areas of our lives. We could say that the past year has been marked by the rise of AI and the automation it brings.

All of these changes have shaken up the way we work and changed many routines. At Axxon, for example, while our office remains open to the public, we have long since digitised parts of the recruitment process, allowing us to be more agile and efficient.

If, in 2019, Infojobs had already provided data to the effect that "one in four Spaniards is thinking about changing jobs", it is clear that there has been a significant increase in these figures since the post-COVID era and all the changes it has brought. Professionals no longer find it so difficult to change jobs if they are offered good conditions, as factors such as telecommuting and digitalisation, among others, can reduce their attachment to the company. After all, human connections are more real away from the computer screen.

Flexibility and personal wellbeing are also becoming more valued. Many people prefer to work from home, away from the big cities. This gives them the peace of mind they need to balance their personal and professional lives.

This dynamic can affect the relationship between employees and the company, reducing their sense of belonging and commitment. In this context, companies need to look for other ways to motivate and engage their employees. There are many reasons why a person might leave a job (e.g., uncompetitive salary, personal reasons, or a better offer). However, sometimes the sense of teamwork and shared success can be weighed up to retain talent.

Building cohesive and long-lasting teams is a key issue for organisations, as the values and goals of both parties can naturally align over time. On the other hand, the constant effort required to train and support new members can undermine this cohesion.

Once the person is on board, it is the company's responsibility to guide and support their professional development. At Axxon, we have developed a guide with strategies and tips for retaining talent in the digital environment and are committed to providing resources and support.
